New voices: welcome!

We want to welcome a guest blogger for a few weeks, who has agreed to explore the issue of privacy online and parenting from her perspective as the parent of a younger child.

Over the next few weeks she will talk about where she has boundaries and lines to protect her personal privacy as well as the privacy of family culture--whose stories are these, anyways?

She may also visit and review a few mommy blog sites--a kind of good , bad, and ugly tour, so that we get a sense of what's going on in the mommy blog world right now.

She might look at what's going on at Cafemom --a blog site for multi users and for marketing; she might also take a look at blogs that are written by private authors.
We look forward to her ideas and responses.

My name is Claire Renic and I’m a second year WGS/rhetoric student at the University of Winnipeg, with plans to continue my higher education in women’s studies, with a focus on sexology. Being born in the nineties means I am a child of the internet; my generation has grown up connected, and this sense of connection shows no sign of slowing down. My relationship with social media and screen is one of the longest term relationships I have to date. For as long as I can remember I’ve been interested in screen, which resulted in both parents implementing restrictions on the amount of “screen time” both my sister and I took in daily. moving to the question of privacy and online practices

The rather old fashioned word wiretapping continues to be used against 3rd party interventions -- when 3rd parties tap into phone or internet conversations to gain privileged information. Donald Trump has raised the specter of wiretapping as something done to him although his allegations are often unfounded,  floundering and meeting with denial. Would a word like "open line" best describe the willingness of ordinary citizens to expose their private conversations and information to the online world listening in.  Online users who are interested have learned that privacy settings offer limited protection of one's privacy.
