Her Bad Mother's Back

For some, having Her Bad Mother Blog back on line is good news. For us, it's interesting and offers a chance to delve into talking about how some bloggers include narratives of their children in their online diary.

Kudos to Catherine Connors for being open minded about gender fluid attitudes and parenting practices (see her blog last week on "the politics of my pony"), however she bases her blog on telling on her son's choices and presenting her 7 year old son "Jasper" as a character who is real.

It may be that eventually she will reveal that she is talking about a fictional family, yet at this point she is modeling a time worn mommy blogging strategy of telling about family matters and about difficult passages family members are going through. In the blog she her hands all over it!

Our question is whether or not she needs to stick to her own stories without outing her son's love for a stereotypically female/girl toy.  If he feels a bit distressed about this choice, clearly not wanting his friends or the world to know he loves my little pony, then it seems odd she takes the opportunity to tell his news to as many people as possible through her popular blog.

This week's posting "it takes a (pony-loving) village" sings the praises of instant supportive community that has developed from her previous posting, and outing her son, however we are still mindful of the exploitative nature of her approach and how Jasper may feel about it in a few months or years.

She comes up with problem of the week -  her son's not her own - she gets solutions from her online followers - and then returns to her blog to point out that an online community is only a post away.

What she is demonstrating here is like a text book example of what can be accomplished by mommy blogging; problem sharing and solving involving like minded others who may not be thinking critically about larger concerns related to disclosing personal information of children.

It seems like Her Good Mother's back with a vengeance.
